Tungsten is an element, number 74 on the periodic table and also known as Wolfram. Tungsten, is a metal with high density and the second highest melting point of all elements. When fashioned into jewellery, tungsten feels similar to gold in regards to weight.

What is Tungsten Carbide?

Tungsten carbide, according to TungstenWorld, “is an alloy, which means it contains at least two different metals or at least a metal and a non-metal element.” Many tungsten rings are tungsten carbide. Like pure tungsten, tungsten carbide also is durable and stiffer than steel.

The durability of tungsten make it an ideal material for rings, such as wedding bands, that are worn daily. Tungsten typically keeps its original luster for the life of the ring or other piece of jewellery. Often people ask if tungsten can be scratched — of course, but generally not by any average daily activity. It takes something extremely hard, like a diamond, to scratch tungsten.
